Experience Mixed with Newcomers Look to Lead Powerlifting

With the powerlifting season starting this month, the Panther Powerlifters are in full swing with pre-season workouts. Coach Baronich, who is beginning his 37th year as a head powerlifting coach, is looking for his experienced lifters to set the tone for the multitude of young lifters who are expected to contribute.

Seniors Tim Bennett and Aaron Gooden, along with Juniors Matthew Sant and Mason Watson, will look to lead the boys team, which finished 7th in last year’s East Regional. Senior Christian Jones and Junior Isabella Schamber are the leading returning lifters for the girls team that finished 5th in the East Regional last year. Five lifters qualified for the LHSPLA State Meet last season before the season was shut down due to COVID-19.

Coach Baronich will depend heavily on a group of Sophomores to supplement the returning boy lifters. Devyn Jones, Keenan Griffin, Jaden Sylvester, and Willie Nunnery are four lifters that are expected to contribute to the Panthers this season.

On the girls side, Junior India Morgan will join Sophomores Victoria Alder, Lauren Earl, Marie Sierra, Kara Love, and Celine Thomas as newcomers that will help lead the Lady Panthers.

Coach Baronich  says that he has high expectations for both teams.

“Expectations for the boys team is high. We are returning a lot of experience with a lot of young talent. For the girls, we are still a very young team experience-wise because of the early graduation of three regional team members this year. Christian Jones is the lone senior of the group, looking to improve on our Regional finish from last year.”

The Panthers will begin their season on the road at the Joey Chutz Invitational at Denham Springs High on January 23rd. The Panthers will also attend the St. Amant Invitational on February 6th, and will host a boys and girls Tri Meet on January 30th and February 11th, respectively.

The Panthers will return to Denham Springs for the LHSPLA Girls and Boys East Regional on February 26th and 27th, and those lifters who qualify for the State Meet will participate at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on March 19th and 20th.

Athletes who would like to join this year’s Powerlifting team can contact Coach Baronich in the gym before December 18th for information.

Lady Panther Basketball Looks for Continued Improvement

Lady Panther Basketball Looks for Continued Improvement

In his second year as the Head Coach of the Woodlawn Lady Panther basketball team, Coach Jonathan Kohn expects to improve.

“My expectations are to improve, as both individuals and as a team, every practice and every game. I want this to be a fun experience for my players while at the same time striving towards the goals we set forth for ourselves. Whether we win or whether we lose, it is always my goal to be playing better at the end of the season than at the beginning of the season.”

Kohn will lean on returning Sophomore Forward Regan McDowell, who was recognized as an All-District Honorable Mention player last season. Kohn will also look for leadership from returning Senior Forward Brianna Johnson, as well as Guards Quiandra Bell and Celine Thomas.

Newcomers Trinity Spears, Tralyn Riley, and Qiana Dotch are also expected to help the Lady Panthers improve from last year’s 5-22 record.

Kohn will be joined by assistant Coach Brandy Robinson-Moore, who is in her first season as an assistant at Woodlawn, and Coach Nelson Malpica, who brings years of coaching experience to the team.

Coach Kohn says that he is excited about the way the season has started for the Lady Panthers, and relishes the opportunity to compete Through seven games played this season, the Lady Panthers have nearly reached last year’s win total, notching three victories to date.

“I look forward to competing in every contest regardless of the opponent. Each team that we play this year is different and offers a new set of challenges every time we step on the court. The greatest part about basketball is that there are so many ways to be successful as a team. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting season! We have a great group of girls on this years team.”

Female students interested in joining the Lady Panther basketball team are encouraged to see Coach Kohn in the gym, or reach out to him at [email protected].

Woodlawn ELL students have taken on a new challenge to improve and grow in their English skills by using Imagine Learning.  Each week the students are assigned minutes for their homework and are given the opportunity to win small but meaningful prizes. Since we began this process, we have seen the average student use go up to more than 100% and their lesson passing rate went up to 78%. The real growth shows in their lessons passed by the curriculum area: Literacy 85%, Grammar 82%, and Oral Vocabulary 73%. This tremendous growth shows true dedication. Thank you, students, and once again congratulations for your efforts.

The winners of the weekly Imagine Learning contest thus far are: Jezer Hernandez, Edgar Serrato, Mary Rodriquez, Sander Done, and Abner Garcia.

EBR Counseling Offers SEL Screener

EBR Counseling Offers SEL Screener

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System Comprehensive Counseling Curriculum aims to teach critical social-emotional learning (SEL) skills to our students.

SEL is understanding and managing emotions, settling and achieving positive goals, showing empathy for others, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, and making responsible decisions.

The EBR Counseling Comprehensive Curriculum teaches skills in the following three areas:

  • Understanding self as an individual and as a member of diverse, local, and global communities.
  • Interacting with others in ways that respect individual and group differences.
  • Applying personal safety skills and coping strategies.

An SEL screener will be administered to EBR students. The screener screens for social behavior, academic behavior, and emotional behavior. This screener will help us identify students that may need additional support. In order for your student to participate, you should complete the consent form at the link provided below.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school counselor at (225)753-2665, the EBRPSS Department of Counseling at (225)388-5501, or the ICare Program at (225)226-3373.

CLEP Testing Now Offered at Woodlawn High

CLEP Testing Now Offered at Woodlawn High

Woodlawn High School is excited to announce that we will once again offer CLEP testing as an opportunity for students to earn college credit for their high school coursework. CLEP is the College-Level Examination Program® offered by the College Board. “CLEP offers 34 exams that cover intro-level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, you could earn three or more college credits at more than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities.”

Click here to watch a short video on CLEP exams: https://youtu.be/2Oxc6YOYaRs.

What CLEP Exams will WHS offer? While CLEP has 34 available exams, Woodlawn High has opted to focus our attention on the exams that best align to the coursework our students are completing.

We will offer the following CLEP exams for the 2020-2021 school year:

CLEP TESTCORRESPONDING COURSE

Students who wish to take a CLEP exam that is not listed should contact the CLEP Coordinator, Ms. Miller for more information.

Why should students take a CLEP exam? At Woodlawn High School, CLEP tests are optional exams open to any student who wants to test regardless of academic program. Colleges use CLEP test scores to decide if they should give students college credit or placement for their knowledge in the tested subject area. Woodlawn recommends that students take a CLEP test at the end of the term in which they complete a corresponding course. For example, if a student takes US History in the fall term, they should take the History of the US II CLEP test in December. If a student has US History in the spring term, they should take the History of the US II CLEP test in May.

If you are still trying to decide if you should take a CLEP exam, CLEP recommends that you ask yourself these questions:

Does my college or university accept the CLEP exam subject I’m interested in taking?

  • Does the CLEP exam I’m interested in taking fulfill a degree requirement?
  • Have I already gained knowledge in any of the CLEP exam subjects through a previous course, independent reading and study, work, or other experience?
  • Am I looking for ways to reduce my college tuition bill?
  • Do I need to earn my degree in a shorter amount of time?

What is the difference between CLEP and AP exams?

· CLEP tests are offered year-round, but AP tests are only offered once a year in May at participating test centers. Woodlawn High is an approved test center for CLEP and AP.

· CLEP exams are computer-based tests with multiple choice questions (except College Composition) that take approximately one to two hours to complete. AP Tests are paper-based tests with multiple choice and free response questions for all subject areas that take two to three hours to complete.

· Students receive CLEP scores immediately after submitting their exams online. The College Composition test is the only CLEP exam with essays; therefore, these scores are not released immediately. AP scores are made available to students two months after the test date; the anticipated score release date is in July each year.

· Students can earn college credit or placement for qualifying scores for both CLEP and AP exams, but the credit awarded may vary based on the test and the college awarding the credit. Students should check college and university websites to see what AP and/or CLEP exams and their qualifying scores are needed to receive credit at that school. Keep in mind that some colleges will not award CLEP credit if a student already took the equivalent course at another college or as a Dual Enrollment class in high school.

· AP exams help determine eligibility for AP Scholar Recognitions. There are no College Board recognitions associated with CLEP scores at this time.

Should students take the CLEP or AP test for their AP classes? There is no right answer to this question. The curriculum taught in the AP class may be different than what is assessed on the CLEP exam. Many AP teachers are working to help prepare students for both AP and CLEP exam options. By preparing for both exams, students that take an AP class in the fall term will have the option to CLEP test in December 2020 instead of waiting until May 2021 for the AP test. Students are encouraged to check with their AP teachers to see what CLEP exam most matches the AP curriculum before signing up for a CLEP test. There is not a CLEP exam available for every AP class that WHS offers, so some students will only have the option to take the AP test in May 2021. Students enrolled in AP classes are automatically signed up for the corresponding AP exam, but students will not be charged an exam fee if they do not test in May 2021. Students always have the option to take both AP and CLEP tests for an additional exam fee of $95 per test.

When is CLEP testing, and how do I sign up? CLEP testing will take place once per term at Woodlawn High School. The fee to take a CLEP test is $95 per test. To take a CLEP test, students must be pre-registered by the registration deadline and pay the exam fee a minimum of one week prior to testing. Please refer to the dates below for CLEP registration and testing dates:

FALL REGISTRATION DEADLINE: November 15, 2020 – FALL TEST DATES: December 10-11, 2020

SPRING REGISTRATION DEADLINE: March 15, 2020 – SPRING TEST DATES: May 10-11, 2021

To sign up, students should submit the CLEP Registration Form by the registration deadlines above. Students will need to submit the form one time for fall term CLEP exams and submit it a second time for spring term CLEP exams. After you register, be sure to stop by Ms. Miller’s office to pick up the 2020 Official CLEP Study Guide book.
