Collins, Matthews Help Lead Panthers

Collins, Matthews Help Lead Panthers

The Panther football program surprised some in the state of Louisiana during the COVID-shortened 2020 football season. The Panthers, led by second year Head Coach Marcus Randall, finished the season by hosting a first round playoff game. Although Woodlawn High fell short in that game, they far exceeded most expectations by ranking in the top 16 of the LHSAA Class 5A Power Rankings.

Cornerback Jordan Matthews has received scholarship offers from Mississippi State, Virginia, and FAU.

Members of the Class 2023 helped supply the Panthers with lots of offensive firepower and many defensive stops. Quarterback Rickie Collins and cornerback Jordan Matthews were two student-athletes that excelled on the field in the fall. At the conclusion of the season, the pair was named to the 2020 District 5-5A All-District team. However, the recognition that the two received did not stop in the fall.

Both Matthews and Collins have since received several scholarship offers from colleges around the country. Matthews was the first to receive an offer, from SEC West member-school Mississippi State. That offer came in early January, and was quickly followed by and offer from the University of Virginia only three days later. Florida Atlantic University was the third school to offer Matthews.

“I knew that I would eventually get offers, but I had no idea that they would come this early,” said Matthews. “I also realized that getting the offer was not the ultimate goal, so I have to continue to outwork others to continue to succeed.”

Not to be outdone, Collins was the next out of the pair to receive an offer. He didn’t just receive one or two offers, Collins received three offers in a two and a half week period. The University of Memphis offered, followed by the University of Arkansas. Virginia Tech offered Collins a scholarship two days after Arkansas.

Rickie Collins had received scholarship offers from Arkansas, Virginia Tech, and Memphis.

“The Class of 2023 is full of really good quarterbacks in the state,” said Collins. “I knew that some of them had already received some scholarship offers, but I knew that my offers would eventually come. Most athletes don’t get any offers until their junior or senior year, so I knew that mine would come when it was my time.”

Collins and Matthews both acknowledge their excitement at receiving interest from major college programs. They were both able to point out what led to this interest.

“First, our intelligence is high. Both on the field, and in the classroom,” explained Matthews. “We have high field IQ, and we also have high GPAs.”

Matthews, who is a student in the Great Scholars Academy, carries a 4.6 GPA. Collins, who takes traditional classes, carries a 3.5 GPA.

“I want to piggy-back off of what Jordan said, and add that we also have a lot of people in our corner,” said Collins. “Our coaches and family have always had our back, and always helped promote us.”

As the discussion with Collins and Matthews continued, the two student-athletes continually brought up their teammates.

“Football is a team sport, and the two of us aren’t the only reason that we have a chance to be a good team,” said Matthews. “We need everyone to contribute to the success of the team. We have a lot of talented players on both sides of the ball in our class.”

Offensively, offensive lineman Roy Brackins and wide receivers Clayton Adams and Tramon Douglas were mentioned multiple times. Defensive linemen Devyn Jones and Devin Boyd, along with defensive backs DJ Delmore and Dawaun Harris, are defensive players from the class of 2023 that Collins and Matthews talked about.

“Roy is going to be next. His size, smarts, and athletic ability on the offensive line are getting him attention already,” said Collins. “Clayton and Devin and Devyn will get some (scholarship offers) as well. Hopefully schools coming to see us will notice all of the other talented players that are on the field.”

The attention that Collins and Matthews bring to Woodlawn High will, undoubtedly, bring higher expectations. The two understand that, and are ready for it.

“Our expectations are to win championships. Anything less than that is a failure, in my eyes,” said Collins. “We have all the tools; players, coaches, and support. I realize that I have to be the leader, I have to work harder than everyone else, and that will lead my teammates to work harder.”

Esports Team Wins First Contest

Esports Team Wins First Contest

A historical first has occurred in the annals of Woodlawn High School Athletics. Our very own Panther Esports Team has brought home our first match win in a Super Smash Tournament. Panther Esports Sub team, The Generation of Mind War, made up of Jason Delcid, Brizzio Dore, and Jesus Jimenez, came away with the best of three victory in their first ever Panther Esports match.

Esports is a lively, growing activity at high schools and colleges all over the country. It is a form of sport competition using video games. It often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, usually individually or as teams. Esports is projected to top $1 billion in revenue this year alone and double to $2 billion next year.

Panther Esports at Woodlawn High School is led by team captain Delcid. The team, which is in it’s inaugural season, currently has 16 players. Panther Esports is a member of the PlayVS league. PlayVS operates state leagues in partnership with 23 state associations and regional leagues nationwide and helps to bring Esports to all 50 states. PlayVS is sanctioned by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, which means that Panther Esports team members can earn varsity letters for participating in Esports for Woodlawn High. Players can also earn college scholarships and acceptance to their college Esports teams.

All video game matches are played online from the players’ personal devices and in the comfort of their own home. Panther Esports currently participates in two different video game title competitions. Super Smash Brothers is a one-on-one fighting game that is the most popular game for the Woodlawn High Esports team. Super Smash Brothers features many popular characters from video games across all platforms. The game allows players to use their favorite character to fight in one-on-one matches. Esports members have three one-on-one matches, with the victorious team winning at least two matches. The Panthers also have a Rocket League Team. Rocket League is a soccer game that is played with vehicles that have special features.

Although the spring 2021 league championship has already begun, Panther Esports can accept new team members who would like to play Rocket League or Super Smash Brothers. Any prospective Panther Esports team members should see Mr. Frazier in room 720 for information on how to join.

The group was led by sophomore Celine Thomas, who was the East Regional Champion for the 148 pound weight class, senior Tim Bennett, who was the runner-up in the SHW class, and sophomore Devyn Jones, who was the runner-up in the 275 pound weight class.

Coach Baronich was pleased with the overall effort of both the girls and boys team.

“Our kids did a great job of competing on Friday and Saturday at the Regional Meet. Many PR’s were set along with six of them earning spots in the upcoming LHSAA Division I State Meet in Monroe later this month. Our boys team scored well enough across all weight to finish as East Regional Runner-ups.”

The Runner-up boys team consisted of Bennett, Jones, Nunnery, Matthew Sant, Jaden Sylvester, Keenan Griffin, Marcus Stewart, Mason Watson, Devin Trim, Hunter Thomas, and Roy Brackins. Sant, Sylvester, Griffin, and Stewart are all alternates at the upcoming State Meet.

Lady Panthers Recognized with Post Season Awards

Lady Panthers Recognized with Post Season Awards

The Woodlawn High Lady Panther Soccer team were recently recognized with a multitude of post-season awards. The Panthers placed nine players on the Division II District 4 All-District teams.

Junior Seema Kawji is now a three time All-District player for the Lady Panthers.

Junior forward Seema Kawji led the Panthers with ten goals scored this season. She returned to her forward position this year, and was named All-District for the third straight season. Kawji has been named to the first team for two straight seasons. She has consistently been near the top of the Lady Panthers’ goal production during her time with Woodlawn.

Carolina Alvarado returned to the Lady Panthers for her third season as well. As a sophomore, she was named to the District 4 First Team as a defensive midfielder. This season, Alvarado moved to the midfield position, and the move paid dividends for the Lady Panthers. Alvarado was able to add pressure to opposing defenses, scoring four goals on the season, which placed her second on the team in goals scored. For the second consecutive year, she was named to the District First Team.

Sophomore Layla Shelton was a breakout performer for this year’s Lady Panther soccer team. The sophomore forward broke into the starting lineup this season after being a reserve at defensive midfield last year. Shelton’s quickness was her biggest asset as she attacked defenses and was able to score her first career goal. She was also named to the Division II District 4 First Team.

The final Lady Panther selected to the first team was Marie Sierra. Sierra, who could not compete her freshman year due to an injury, made the most of her first year on the pitch. The sophomore stepped into a starting position with the Lady Panthers as a center midfielder. Sierra’s athletic ability was as evident in soccer as it is in the other sports she participates in.

The four Lady Panthers first-team players not only excelled on the field this season; the girls also combined for an average 4.43 GPA.

Junior Mikaela Mattix was named to the All-District team this season.

Outside of the four first team players, the Lady Panthers had five players named to the District Second Team. Wings Kaitlyn Arceneaux, Victorine Kasangandjo, and Mikaela Mattix joined defenders Charlize Garcia Blanco and Andrea Rodriguez on the team.

The Lady Panthers also had two seniors who stood out both on and off the field. Kasangandjo and goalie Julyana Espinal brought a wealth of experience and dedication to the program. Both players excelled in the classroom, carrying a combined 3.7 GPA. The two seniors have been accepted into multiple universities and will surely continue to be leaders in their future.

While the final record for the Lady Panthers did not meet their expectations, the girls showed heart and determination this season. They are eager to continue growing their team, with both the players that will return for the 2021-2022 season, and any new players that would like to join the program.

The goal for the program is to focus on our studies, team building, a building a culture of healthy habits, dedication, and teamwork.

Woodlawn Baseball Welcomes Alumni with Victory over FCA

Woodlawn Baseball Welcomes Alumni with Victory over FCA

New Head Coach Jonathan Kohn knew the history of the Woodlawn High Baseball Program. Kohn grew up in Baker, and was always aware of the Woodlawn baseball teams. When he was named Head Coach, he knew that he needed to lean on that history in order to build for the future.

One of Kohn’s first attempts to build the program was to invite former players to Alumni Day. The Panthers faced Family Christian Academy on Saturday, February 27th in front of family, friends, and alumni. The Panthers did not disappoint their fans, as they came away with a 21-11 victory.

Woodlawn High was led by junior right hander Khalil Lee, who recorded the win on the mound. Lee threw four complete innings, allowing only one run, and striking out three FCA batters. The Panthers were led at the plate by senior outfielder Troy Washington and junior utility player Braeden Hodges. Washington went 2 for 3, including a three RBI inside-the-park homerun in the 1st inning. Hodges reached base all three at bats, with two hits and a walk.

Several Woodlawn Baseball Alumni were present at the game. Former Panther Dutchie Blanton, Class of 2001, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Justin Reynolds (Class of 2000), Chad Risher (Class of 2004), Chris Morals (Class of 1991), and Frank Ritter (Class of 2020) were also in attendance. Also present were former Woodlawn Baseball coaches Ron Turpin, Norman Browning, and Donny Walton.

Coach Browning took time to speak to the current team after the victory.

“Woodlawn has a long history of success in baseball. This program means a lot to many people, and they want to see this program successful. We will do our best, as alumni, to bring more members of the Woodlawn Baseball Family back to Woodlawn,” said Browning. “You, as current members of the program, are the key to the future success of this program.”

Coach Kohn would like to thank all members of the Woodlawn Baseball Alumni for attending Saturday’s game. A special thank you to Dustin Felton, Woodlawn Alumni member and owner of Rice and Roux, for providing post-game jambalaya for both teams.

The Panthers will be back in action three times this week. Woodlawn will travel to Pete Goldsby Field to face Madison Prep on Monday, March 1st, before hosting Scotlandville on Wednesday, March 3rd. The Panthers will also host Port Allen on Thursday, March 4th.

Tickets to all Panther home games can be purchased at the Panther online tickets store by clicking here. Tickets will become available each Monday for that week’s games.
