Each week the Panther Play by Play will review the athletic contests from the previous week and look forward to the coming week’s action.

Bowling:
Four Panther bowlers, Aubrey Bratkowski, Henry Bratkowski, John Cador, and Keylen Sonnier, continue to prepare for the individual state championships.
Next up for Bowling: The four Panther bowlers will be in action on Friday, April 5th at All-Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
Tennis
Our Panther tennis team faced Parkview Baptist at Highland Road Park on Monday. Both our boys and girls teams fell in tight matches. Our boys were led by Jacob Aime and Sam Marino, who won their first court doubles match by the score of 6-3, 6-4.
Next up for Tennis: The Panther tennis teams will play Lutcher on the 25th at Lutcher High and EA on the 27th at Highland Road Tennis Center. Both matches will start at 3 pm.
Track
Our track team hosted the LA National Guard Woodlawn Invitational on the 21st. Our boys’ team came in first, and the girls’ team came in 4th.
For the boys, senior Alex Collins came first in the shot put, senior Khamory Gipson came first in the discus, and senior D’Kobe Chesterfield came first in the javelin. Shot – AJ
Senior Darius Chesterfield placed first in the 400 meters and sophomore Liam Dowdy placed first in the 3200 meters. Our 4×200 (Couren Norman, Jay’Cob Jolla, Darius Chesterfield, Cayden Randall), 4×400 (Couren Norman, D’Kobe Chesterfield, Kydell Miner, Darius Chesterfield), and 4×800 (Darius Chesterfield, Kydell Miner, Harlom Turner, Brennen Lamotte) relay teams all placed first as well.
For the girls, junior Lillie Allen placed first in the pole vault and sophomore Angel Sanders-Green placed first in the 400 meters.

Next up for Track: Our track team will compete at Brusly on the 27th.
Baseball
The Panthers unfortunately lost to Maurepas 10-5 on the 18th, and then to French Settlement 13-3 on the 20th.
On the 22nd, the team rallied for a 15-9 win against Slaughter Community Charter, but they faced another close loss to Family Christian Academy on the 23rd (5-4).
Next up for Baseball: Our baseball team will play at Zachary on the 26th at 6 pm, and then at home on the 27th (vs. Madison Prep at 3:30 pm) and 28th (vs. Zachary at 4 pm).
Softball
A week of rain led to all softball games being rained out. Our Lady Panthers will begin district play next week.
Next up for Softball: The Lady Panthers will travel to Central on the 25th, Zachary on the 26th, and then will play their final district contest on the 27th versus either Liberty or Scotlandville. Woodlawn will then host White Castle on the 28th at 4 pm.
Powerlifting
Our Panther Powerlifting team competed at the state meet over the weekend. For the boys, junior Dwayne Beverly came in 6th place in the 275 lb weight class, senior CJ May came in 2nd place in the SHW class, and junior Rashad Batiste won the state championship title in the 198 lb class.
We also had 2 girls bring home state titles – junior Kennedi Kullman in the 97 lb class and senior Jadyn Barner in the 114 lb class. Junior Amy Kirk placed 3rd in the 165 lb class. Congratulations Panthers!

Students’ inspecting their findings after concluding their Pickle Autopsies
Here at WHS, our Introduction to Biomedical Sciences class recently concluded its forensics unit with an engaging and hands-on Pickle Autopsy Lab. This unique laboratory experience was curated and facilitated by Ms. Jackson, a dedicated student teacher enrolled in the esteemed LSU Geaux Teach program.
Ms. Jackson’s meticulous planning and innovative teaching approach brought this captivating lab to life, providing students with a memorable and educational opportunity. Her commitment to delivering high-quality instruction is evident in the success of the activity.
As Ms. Jackson progresses towards her graduation, Woodlawn High School extends our heartfelt congratulations and pride for her outstanding contributions to student learning. This Pickle Autopsy Lab stands as a testament to her dedication and passion for education. Well done, Ms. Jackson!

Discover the world of agricultural engineering with Camp CRISP, an immersive internship program supported by a USDA Sustainable Agricultural Systems grant to the LSU AgCenter. The program, titled “Climate Resilient Innovations for Sustainable Production of Rice” (CRISP – Rice), is designed to introduce participants to cutting-edge research and industry insights.
2024 Camp CRISP Details:
- Dates: June 17th – June 28th, 8:00am – 4:30pm (weekdays only)
- Location: Louisiana State University (LSU) and nearby research field stations
Highlights Include:
- Lab Tours: Explore LSU’s laboratories and witness research projects firsthand, gaining valuable insights into the life of a scientist.
- Research Station Tour: Get hands-on experience in agricultural research at various field stations. Engage in activities related to soil science, crop production, pest management, and more, deepening your understanding of these fields.
- Introductory Seminars: Attend informative seminars conducted by LSU professors covering diverse topics, from career opportunities to the importance of sustainable agriculture in today’s world.
Financial Support: We recognize the value of this experience and are committed to making it accessible. Participants will receive a stipend of $1,000, provided in the form of a check at the end of the program. On Tuesday, March 19th, our Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) students embarked on an enriching journey to Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) as part of a specialized college tour. Led by dedicated educators, our scholars delved into the realm of higher education, gaining invaluable insights into campus life, academic programs, and career pathways.
During their visit, our students were treated to a comprehensive tour of the SLU campus, immersing themselves in the vibrant atmosphere and distinctive features that define university life. From state-of-the-art facilities to bustling student hubs, they explored the diverse landscapes that make up the academic landscape of SLU.
Guided by knowledgeable staff and student ambassadors, our JAG scholars gained firsthand knowledge about the myriad areas of study available at SLU, empowering them to make informed decisions about their future academic pursuits. Additionally, they had the privilege of experiencing the culinary delights of the Mane Dish cafeteria, offering a taste of the dining options available to prospective students.
Equipped with a meticulously curated packet of university information and memorabilia, our students departed SLU with a deeper understanding of the collegiate experience and the resources available to support their academic journey. This transformative trip served as a catalyst for our scholars, igniting their passion for higher learning and reinforcing the mantra that “learning is worth it.”
As aptly stated by Mr. Riley, our esteemed JAG teacher, this excursion exemplifies Woodlawn High School’s unwavering commitment to providing unparalleled opportunities for academic and personal growth.

Congratulations to Jillian Stewart for excelling in French II and Kimbreaux Pattan for his outstanding performance in Family and Consumer Sciences at the District Academic Rally in February! They both placed in the top 3 in their subjects at the district level. Their achievements have earned them the opportunity to represent Woodlawn High at the State Academic Rally on Saturday, March 23rd at Louisiana State University. Mr. Lee and Ms. Lee will be accompanying these two students to the rally tomorrow. We are incredibly proud of these students’ hard work and dedication.
“I’m really excited! I’m also a little nervous, to be honest, but I know we are as prepared as we can be for the rally tomorrow,” said Stewart.
A big shoutout goes to Mr. Hymel and Ms. Thomas for their invaluable support and guidance in preparing these students for success in their respective courses. Your dedication to your students’ learning is truly commendable.
To all the teachers and mentors who have contributed to the preparation of these students for the rally, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Thank you for your commitment to nurturing students’ talents and helping them reach their full potential.
