Four Returning Starters Look to Lead Volleyball Team

Head Coach Malpica says that he is excited about the upcoming volleyball season. The Lady Panthers will look to build upon last season, which saw the team make it to the second round of the playoffs. The girls finished with a 21-17 record in 2015.

“We have two senior leaders, Kerri Williams and Myah Johnson, that come back with lots of experience. We will look for them to lead us back to the playoffs this year,” says Malpica. “We also have two underclassmen that are returning from our playoff run last year.”

Coach Malpica is clearly relying on the two seniors, Kerri and Myah, the most. Kerri will contribute from her outside hitter position, while Myah returns as the team’s setter.

“Kerri is our best all-around player. She is our best offensive and defensive player. She is very quick defensively and very powerful offensively. Myah is the quarterback of our team. We are counting on her to lead the offense and help us to score points,” says Coach Malpica.

“We have two juniors returning with two years experience playing varsity volleyball,” adds Coach Malpica. “Kennedi Barnes and Hannah Luker will help compliment our two returning seniors. Kennedi is our big middle blocker. We expect her to step up this year and lead us defensively. Hannah is one of our outside hitters, and we expect a lot from her this year also. Hannah has a lot of experience from playing club volleyball the last three or four years.”

Coach Malpica was also quick to speak about two new starters that have stepped up during early practices.

“Mercedes Pickens is a junior who is going to play outside hitter for us. She has done well through the first few practices and we look for her to contribute. Kyra Britton is an incoming freshman who we expect to start from day one. She will play middle blocker for us this season.”

With the recent flooding of our community, the Lady Panthers have had to reorganize their schedule. The girls have had to cancel all of their scrimmages that were scheduled, along with cancelling practices. Woodlawn will look to begin practice again on Monday, August 22nd at 2:30 pm. The Lady Panthers will then travel to Brusly on Tuesday for their Jamboree.

Updated Panther Football Schedule

After the devastating floods that have impacted much of the Woodlawn community, members of the Panther football team are looking to return to the gridiron. The team was able to practice on Thursday for the first time since flooding hit the area last Friday. The Panthers will look to practice once again Friday at 3 pm, before travelling to Live Oak Saturday. The Panthers and Eagles will have a twenty-four period practice, with a scrimmage period to end the practice. The teams look to begin the practice at 5 pm. The teams will be fed by Live Oak boosters following the practice.

While the practice schedule for next week is still up in the air, the Panthers look to have a normal game-week schedule. The Panthers will finish the week Friday when they meet McKinley High School in the East Baton Rouge Parish Football Kick-off Classic Jamboree. The schedule for the Jamboree has changed due to the flooding. Woodlawn will battle McKinley, but the two teams will no longer meet in JV action. The Panthers will kick off at 6:30 pm, followed immediately by Glen Oaks vs. Tara.

Key Returning Players Look to Lead Panthers

With the 2016 football season quickly approaching, the Woodlawn Football team will lean on several returning players to provide leadership both on and off the field. Coach Luquet begins his second season at the helm of the squad, and is glad he can count on these players, along with a few new faces, on both offense and defense.

The Panther offense will be led by two year returning starter and All-District Running Back Javin Myers. The ULM commit looks to help guide the Panthers past the first round of the playoffs this season. Coach Luquet says that Javin “is an intricate part of what we do both on and off the field. We are excited that we have Javin returning to help lead some of the younger student-athletes that we will depend on this season.”

Javin Myers looks to help provide leadership for the Panthers both on and off the field.

Senior Center Edward “Bubba” Ducre is also a returning two year starter and All District Offensive Lineman. “Bubba is an outstanding young man who will help lead our four new starters on the offensive line. His leadership both on and off the field will be extremely important in helping the development of this unit,” says Coach Luquet. “Both Bubba and Javin do the correct things at all times; in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. Because of this, they have both been selected as Offensive Captains for this year’s team.”

One new face the Panthers will count on is converted Wide Receiver Brian Byrd. Brian will step in as the starting Quarterback this year for Woodlawn High. “Brian has done everything we have asked him to do all summer and we are excited about the opportunities that he and Javin in the same backfield present,” states Coach Luquet.

Woodlawn’s football team expects to be led by their experienced defense this season. At the forefront of this defense is two year starter Aaron White. Aaron is a senior Defensive Lineman and two year All District selection. Coach Luquet says, “We are looking for Aaron to be the leader of the defense this season. His presence in the locker room and on the field are second to none. I am excited to see Aaron up front (on the defensive line) along with the additions to the defense.”

Aaron White is a returning two time All District Defensive Lineman.

While Trevon Hardnett may not be a new addition, he is returning from a Week 2 season ending knee injury. The cornerback looks to regain the form that helped him win the starting job as a rising junior. “Trey has proven through summer and early fall practices that he was a vital piece missing from last year’s defense. He allows us to do multiple things on defense that we couldn’t always do last season,” says Coach Luquet.

Trevon Hardnett looks to return from a knee injury that ended his Junior season.

Coach Luquet will also lean heavily on two returning juniors on the defensive side of the ball. Xavier Lodge will return to his safety position after his First Team All-District campaign in 2015. Kyron Mims, who has scholarship offers from Nicholls State, Southern University, and Jackson State, will return as a force on the defensive line. “With Xavier patrolling the back end, and Kyron anchoring the defensive line, the defense should be exciting for our fans to watch.”

Xavier Lodge is a returning All-District 6-4A Safety.

Kyron Mims will improve the DL, which is already returning two starters.

Boys Basketball Looks to Continue Momentum

As the 2016-2017 school year begins, the Woodlawn Boys Basketball team looks to continue momentum into the season. The Panthers can look back on having a prosperous summer. The Boys Basketball Team can build on a successful off-season workout program and a thriving Summer League that hosted 14 Varsity and 8 Junior Varsity Teams.

As school begins, the basketball team will be participating in in-school workouts and drills. They will also practice after school via 4 on 1 drills.

Players will need to have all physicals and LHSAA paper work submitted to Coach Fernandez prior to beginning their after school conditioning program on Monday, September 10th. The first practice will be held on October 10th in the hopes of fine tuning the talents needed to jumpstart a successful season, which begins with the Larry Grantham Tara Jamboree on November 10th.

Panthers Look Forward to 2016 Season

With the first week of practice behind them, the Panther football team is anxiously looking forward to the upcoming 2016 season. The Panthers look to continue to build on recent success, which has included playoff appearances in each of the last three seasons.

Fans will be able to get their first look at the 2016 version of the Panthers on August 18th. The Panthers will travel to Live Oak for their annual fall scrimmage that will begin at 6 pm.

Woodlawn will then look ahead to the East Baton Rouge Parish Football Kick-off Classic Jamboree at 6:30 pm on August 26th. The Panthers will face former district rival McKinley in a JV/Varsity doubleheader. Each game will consist of two twelve minute halves.

The regular season begins on September 2nd as Woodlawn travels to Hahnville. Week 2 opponent Destrehan visits Woodlawn on September 9th. The Panthers are then on the road Weeks 3 through 5, travelling to Lafayette on September 16th, St. Amant on September 23rd, and West St. John on September 30th. The grueling pre-district schedule should help to prepare the Panthers for District 6-4A play.

The first district game brings Belaire to Woodlawn on October 6th for Homecoming. On October 14th, the Panthers will host Tara. The Panthers then welcome Plaquemine to Woodlawn on October 21st for the annual “Shirt Off My Back” award night. Woodlawn travels to Louisiana Leadership Institute on Week 9 to face St. Michael. The Panthers end the regular season on November 4th, Senior Night, by hosting Livonia.
